Train travel in Europe - 10 good reasons to take the train:
High speed trains can whisk you from one side of Europe to the other while you relax. The European rail network is now well integrated and companies like Rail Europe offer online ticketing across national boundaries. There are a range of travel passes to suit most requirements, and these can offer substantial savings on normal ticket prices.
Eurostar's new terminal at London St Pancras offers the very latest in amenities and rapid transit to Paris, Brussels and Lille, from where there are onward connections to the rest of Europe. Most of the UK's train operators offer inclusive fares with Eurostar, making through rail travel from your home town to Europe a reality.
Because railway stations are generally in the centre of towns you are delivered conveniently close to your destination rather than arriving at a small airport in the middle of nowhere. Indeed, because there is no need to get to and from the airport or check in ages before the flight is due to depart, high speed trains often offer door-to-door journey times which compare well with flying.
And there is the environmental benefit of train travel. It has been calculated that the carbon emissions per person when travelling by train are about one third that of flying. For instance, a journey from London to Bordeaux by plane produces about 0.24 tonnes of carbon per person but only about 0.08 by train. And that doesn't take into account the damaging effects of aircraft vapour trails in the atmosphere.
